On: Friday, 24 Sep 2021
Venue: Away

New Hall set off to Wales on Friday 24th September for a four-day event at The Celtic Manor Resort, which held the 2010 Ryder Cup. As a team, we played the Montgomerie course in the afternoon to prepare ourselves for the event; the group gathered vital course details to benefit them when tournament play started. Once we arrived on Friday afternoon, the team got straight into their tournament preparation with course mapping and practice sessions on the short game area and driving range.

Day 1 arrived, and New Hall was ready to go! Over the first round on the Roman course at Celtic Manor, New Hall faced some challenges with sloped greens, blind tee shots and firm conditions. First to start us off was Henry, a beautiful drive down the first hole set himself up for the round. Ollie was next and rightfully delivered with a fantastic opening tee shot. Freddie couldn't follow in the same fashion with the drive but the amazing second shot from over 200 yards away to 12 feet set him up for a birdie on the first. Millie got New Hall back into the swing of things with another perfect first tee shot down the middle. After day 1, New Hall was placed middle of the field in 10th position. After a team talk and a well-structured practice session, we felt confident going into day 2.

Day 2 arrived, and the fight was on the climb of the leader board. Henry, Ollie, Mille and Freddie all went out with the hunger to improve on Day 1's scores. After some trouble on the first day, Millie produced a gross score of 77 and pushed herself up the leader board for day 2. Ollie battled through after a slow start with a fantastic one over par back nine for a 74 gross score. Henry was able to post a steady round of 72 and set himself up for the final day. Freddie continued his excellent golf from day 1's 73 with a 72 to sit inside the top 8 players individual leader board. New Hall was able to climb the leader board to 8th position and were ready for day 3.

Day 3 and a 6:30 am arrival at the golf club for an 8 am tee-off time. Filled with hunger and drive to go out and do well for the school, the only thing standing in their way was 30 mph wind and rain. All players were able to adapt to the weather conditions and play a well-executed round of golf. Henry was able to produce another solid round in tricky conditions. Ollie made use of his short game skills and kept himself in the event with a superb level par back fine for a solid gross score of 74 on a tricky afternoon. Mille followed through with again a strong round, considering the conditions that all the players faced. Freddie was the star of the afternoon shooting a gross score of 69, which contributed to a fantastic last day team score and not only pushed himself up the individual leader board but also helped New Hall's team score.

The results were in, and New Hall claimed 5th place finish out of over 20 other schools and colleges. A huge congratulations to Henry, Ollie, Millie and Freddie on such a fantastic fightback from being behind on day 1. A special mention goes to Freddie on a 5th place finish in the individual category with over 100 students playing in the event. Congratulations to Millie, who finished 12th in the girl's category and Henry and Ollie for a top 40 placed finish.

I am super proud of all the players and feel privileged to witness some sensational golf played over four days at Celtic Manor. Please visit our Instagram page @Newhallgolf_ to see all photos and videos of the event.
